Alpine Mercantour Lakes hike from Nice: guide and pickup
The drive to the trailhead crosses the same medieval villages you'll see from the peaks.
This hiking tour from Nice takes you into the Mercantour National Park to alpine lakes in the southern French Alps, with a professional guide and van pickup included. The full day runs about nine hours: roughly four hours of hiking to crystal-clear lakes, plus a scenic three-hour drive through the foothills and medieval villages, with rest and picnic time built in. Your guide, Fabrice, speaks English fluently and has 22 years of mountain experience; he can adjust the route to match your fitness level. Bring good hiking boots, layers, sun protection and your own picnic; the guide provides bottled water.
The Experience
How do you get to the trailhead without a rental car? The van picks you up from Nice itself—no need to arrange transport or navigate mountain roads on your own. The drive winds through the foothills and past old villages, so the journey to the alpine zone is part of the day, not a chore to get through. Once you reach the hiking area, you ascend for about two hours through alpine forest to reach the first lake, with the highest peaks of the range visible above the tree line. The landscape opens as you climb.
The hike itself is refreshing and not relentless. You stop for a picnic or rest at the lake, and the guide can shift the route or the starting point if the terrain feels too steep—the day adapts to your pace and fitness. In the low season (June through October), you may spot mountain goats, ibex or marmots moving across the slopes. Pastoral life and historical traces are woven through the landscape, and Fabrice can point out the stories behind what you're seeing. The whole experience sits inside a single day without feeling rushed.
The group stays small—five people maximum in the van—which means the guide can actually talk with you instead of managing a crowd. If your group is larger, a second vehicle is arranged. You'll need to bring good hiking boots, breathable layers (avoid cotton), a rain jacket, sun protection and a water bottle; Fabrice may have walking poles available if you ask ahead. The guide fee and bottled water are included, but you pack your own lunch and snacks.

What's the hike actually like—how steep is it and how long do I spend on the trail?
The ascent to the alpine lake takes about two hours and climbs through forest to open alpine terrain. The route can be adjusted to your fitness level, so if you're not a regular hiker, Fabrice can choose an easier starting point or different area. You'll spend roughly four hours hiking total across the whole day, with rest and picnic time at the lake.
Do I need special gear or will my regular sneakers work?
Good hiking boots are necessary—the terrain is rocky and steep enough that regular shoes won't grip safely. You'll also need layers (breathable fabric, not cotton), a light rain jacket, sun protection, sunglasses and a water bottle. Walking poles help if you have knee issues, and Fabrice may have poles to lend if you mention it when you book.
What wildlife might I actually see up there?
In the low season from June through October, the Mercantour is home to mountain goats, ibex and marmots. You may spot them on the slopes, though sightings depend on the day and the season. The alpine landscape itself—the peaks, the forest line, the lakes—is the main draw.
How does the pickup from Nice work—where exactly do I meet the guide?
Fabrice picks you up from Nice in his van, which holds up to five people. Confirm your hotel or meeting point when you book, and he'll collect you in the morning. The drive to the trailhead takes about three hours and passes through medieval villages on a scenic mountain road.
Is this hike doable if I'm not super fit, or is it only for experienced hikers?
The hike can be adapted to your level. If you have moderate fitness and can walk steadily uphill for a couple of hours, you can do this. Fabrice adjusts the route or starting point based on what you tell him about your experience, so the day doesn't turn into a slog.
What's included and what do I need to bring myself?
The guide fee, van pickup from Nice and bottled water are included. You bring your own picnic, lunch, snacks and water bottle (at least 1.5 liters per person). Bring all your own hiking gear: boots, layers, rain jacket, sun protection and hat.
