The experience

There’s this low, echoing drip that greets you before you even see the cave mouth at Cerdon. We’d followed a winding path through trees (damp leaves underfoot, a little earthy after last night’s rain), and suddenly there it was: the entrance, half-hidden by moss and shadows. Our guide, Pierre (who grew up nearby), grinned when he saw me hesitate at the threshold. “The air is always cooler here,” he said, and he wasn’t kidding. It felt like stepping into another season entirely.

The underground route twists and opens up in places where you can actually hear your own footsteps bounce back at you. At one point, Pierre pointed out these strange mineral shapes along the walls, he called them “dripstone curtains”, and I caught a whiff of something almost metallic in the air. The whole walk took about an hour and a half, but it didn’t feel long at all.
