  • Visit stork grove with white storks

The Experience

Two hours on a bike through Marais Poitevin means you cover ground without the pace of a full-day commitment. The guide leads you past the Poitou White Poplar -- the tree that defines this landscape -- showing you where it was planted industrially for timber and where it grows wild in the Sèvre Nursery. You see each stage of the tree's life cycle as you ride, understanding why it matters to the region. The route stays off the main roads, moving through the kind of terrain locals know.

The stork grove is the surprise: 15 couples of white storks have made their home in the ancient poplars, and you'll see them from the bike path itself. It's the only place in Marais Poitevin where this happens. As you ride, the guide explains how the marsh's fragile ecosystem holds together -- the water systems, the wildlife, the way the land was shaped by centuries of human settlement. The architecture you pass tells that story too: buildings adapted to living on and around water, choices made by people who understood the place.

Bring at least a litre of water and a hat or cap; the route is exposed in places. The guide speaks French and knows the territory well enough to answer questions about what you're riding through, not just point at it.

Top questions

What exactly is the Marais Poitevin and why is it called Green Venice?

Marais Poitevin is a vast natural marsh in western France, historically known for its boats and the flat-bottomed vessels called pirogues that people used to navigate the waterways. It earned the name Green Venice because of its network of water channels and the lush vegetation that surrounds them, creating a landscape more often explored by boat. The bike tour reveals it from a different angle -- the land itself, the trees and the wildlife that depend on the wetland ecosystem.

Will I actually see the white storks during the ride?

The stork grove is on the route and you'll see it from the bike path itself. Fifteen couples of white storks have taken up residence in the ancient poplars, making it the only place in Marais Poitevin where they nest. Whether you see the birds themselves depends on the time of day and season, but the grove itself is part of the ride.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes accompaniment by a professional guide and the guided bike ride itself. You'll need to bring at least one litre of water and a hat or cap. Gratuities are not included.

Does the guide speak English, or only French?

The guide speaks French. If you need a tour in another language, check with the operator before booking.
