Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Arc de Triomphe and rooftop views

  • Explore interior exhibitions
  • Climb to rooftop terrace
  • Admire panoramic Paris views
  • See Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The experience

You arrive at Place Charles de Gaulle, the vast traffic circle where twelve avenues converge at the Arc de Triomphe. The monument sits at the center, and you enter through the base to explore the interior exhibitions before climbing. The exhibits walk you through the arch's construction, the military victories it commemorates, and the intricate sculptures and reliefs carved into its stone. At the base stands the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame: a quiet space within the bustle of the circle.

The climb to the rooftop terrace is 284 steps if you take the stairs, or you can use the lift if you have reduced mobility. From the top, the city opens in every direction: the Eiffel Tower rises to the west, the Champs-Élysées stretches downhill to the south, and the elegant boulevards radiate outward like spokes from a wheel. The views are unobstructed and the terrace is open to the air, so bring a camera and allow time to pick out landmarks and take in the scale of Paris from above.

The ticket covers admission only. There is no guide included. Plan for one to two hours total. The monument is a five-minute walk from Charles de Gaulle Étoile station (RER A or metro lines 1, 2, 6). The site closes on May 1, May 8, the morning of July 14 and November 11, and has reduced hours on certain holiday periods. Check the official website before you visit. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month from November through March, and on September 19–20 in 2026.
