The experience

Start at the Pantheon in the Latin Quarter, where your prebooked ticket lets you walk past the entrance queue. Inside, you move through the grand interior at your own pace, taking in the frescoes and the tombs of Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, Voltaire and Alexandre Dumas. The audioguide (available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and ten other languages) plays as you go. The climb to the dome rewards you with a sweeping view across Paris rooftops and monuments.

After the Pantheon, you head to the Seine to board a one-hour river cruise. The boat departs from near the Eiffel Tower and glides past the Musée d'Orsay, Notre-Dame, and the city's significant bridges. You see Paris's most recognizable landmarks from the water, a perspective that grounds the geography you've just looked down on from above. The audioguide continues on the boat, so you can follow the landmarks as they pass.

The whole experience (entry, dome access, and the cruise) runs two to three hours, making it a solid half-day outing for a first visit or a free afternoon. Wheelchair users have ramp access and a lift inside the Pantheon. Strollers are permitted. Last admission to the Pantheon is 45 minutes before closing, and note that the monument closes entirely on January 1st, May 1st and December 25th. Dogs are not allowed inside the gates except for guide and assistance dogs.
