The experience
The tour starts early from San Salvador with a 4-hour drive east in an air-conditioned 4x4 truck to reach Espíritu de la montaña Camp at the summit of Conchagua Volcano. Once you arrive, the guide helps you set up your camping tent in the designated eco-friendly area surrounded by lush forest. The rest of the afternoon and evening are yours to settle in, explore the peak, and prepare for the night ahead.
As darkness falls, you'll experience the volcano away from city lights: stargazing with a clear view of the sky, sharing stories around a campfire, and breathing the fresh mountain air. The real draw comes at dawn: the sun rises slowly over the Pacific Ocean, and from your vantage point at the summit, you watch it illuminate the three islands of Meanguera, Zacatillo, and Conchaguita across the Gulf of Fonseca. Breakfast follows the sunrise, giving you time to absorb the view before the descent begins.
On the second day, after breakfast, you head down to Punta Chiquirín Pier (the southernmost point of La Unión province) before returning to San Salvador. The drive back takes the same route you came in, arriving in the city by afternoon.
