The experience

Nine hours total, starting with pickup and a drive to the volcano's main entrance. The climb itself takes 1.5 hours on lush trails to reach the top, where the view opens across Lake Coatepeque, the Santa Ana crater, Cerro Verde National Park, Izalco Volcano and other peaks in western El Salvador, weather permitting. A guide leads the way and points out the landscape as you ascend.

After the summit, you descend and head to Lake Coatepeque for lunch on the shore. The lake stop gives you time to eat and rest. If you want to swim, rent a jet ski or take a boat tour around the lake, those are optional and on your own. The route back to your hotel or starting point follows the same air-conditioned vehicle you arrived in.
