The Santa Ana volcano is El Salvador's highest active volcano, and the hike to its crater is straightforward—2 hours up an easy trail to reach the emerald green lagoon at the top. The operator requests a special permit to enter in the early hours, which means you'll have the volcano largely to yourself and the light for photographs before crowds arrive. Your private guide will be with you throughout, helping with pacing and pointing out the Izalco volcano visible from the crater rim.

After you descend, the day shifts to water.
