The experience

Izalco Volcano sits 1,985 meters high in Sonsonate department and remains active, making it the ideal training ground for trekking and birdwatching. The hike itself is the core of the day: you ascend with your private guide to reach the rim, where you'll see steam and gas venting from the crater and look out across the Pacific and the flower route landscape. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French, and stays with you throughout the climb.

After descending, the day moves to Lake Coatepeque, a crater lake ranked among the ten most beautiful in the world. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word for "Hill of Snakes." Here you can swim in the water, take a small boat out, or simply rest before lunch at the restaurant on the shore. The air-conditioned vehicle transports you between the volcano and the lake, and bottled water is provided throughout.

What’s included

Is this one for you?The climb demands moderate fitness and takes most of the seven to ten hours, so this suits hikers ready for an active day on the slope rather than a leisurely sightseeing tour. Private guiding means the pace and stops are yours alone, and the guide's knowledge of the volcano and the landscape shapes what you notice on the way up.
