The experience
San Miguel volcano rises from near sea level to 2,130 meters as a symmetrical stratovolcano, its flanks covered in coffee plantations and its summit bare rock from frequent eruptions. The last one was in 2013, but the volcano remains active. You start the hike in the small town of Chinameca, where the trail begins its steep ascent toward the broad, deep crater complex at the top. The walk up takes about three hours of sustained climbing. The descent another three, making this a full day of physical effort on a single route.
An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your San Salvador hotel or from El Tunco and brings you to the trailhead. Your local guide, speaking English or Spanish, leads the entire hike and knows the volcano's history and geology. The tour runs 10 to 14 hours total, depending on pace and conditions. WiFi stays available on the vehicle during transit. Groups of more than five people receive group pricing.
