The experience
The bus picks you up at your hotel around 9:00 AM and heads to Ras Mohammed, a protected reserve 12 kilometers away. On the way, you'll stop at a diving center if you need to rent masks, snorkels, or fins. The route itself is not strenuous. The focus is on the stops ahead, not the road.
Your first stop is the Gate of Allah, a rock formation you'll photograph and take in. Then comes the mangroves, where you walk among white herons and small crabs picking through the roots. The Lake of Desires is the centerpiece: you wade into salt water deep enough to swim, and the tradition is to make a wish. After that, you head to Ras Mohammed Bay for the snorkeling itself: the underwater world of the reserve is what draws most visitors here, and you'll have time in the water to see it.
The return journey leaves you back at your hotel around 2:00 PM. The whole outing runs about five and a half hours from pickup to drop-off, which means you have the rest of the afternoon free.
