The Experience

The first thing I remember is the bus windows fogging up a little as we left Sharm el-Sheikh—someone had drawn a smiley face on the glass before we even reached Ras Mohammed. Our guide, Youssef, had this way of pointing things out that made me actually pay attention (I usually zone out on buses). He stopped us at a diving center first—if you forgot your snorkel or fins, you could rent them there. I borrowed a mask that still smelled like sunblock and saltwater. Not unpleasant, just… real.

We pulled up to the Gate of Allah and everyone got quiet for a second. It’s massive and kind of surreal against all that desert. Youssef told us a story about why it was built—I only caught half because a white heron flapped by right then and stole my focus.
