The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Ain Sokhna hotel and a drive inland to the Giza Plateau, where you spend time at the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, taking in views of Cairo from the plateau. From there you head to the Nile River for a felucca, a traditional wooden sailing boat, where you glide along the water and eat lunch aboard while the city passes on either bank. The boat ride gives you a different angle on Cairo than the streets offer, and the meal is part of the package.
After the felucca, the tour moves to two historic sites in Islamic Cairo: the Ibn Tulun Mosque, the city's oldest intact mosque, known for its geometric architecture and spiral minaret; and the Gayer-Anderson Museum, housed in two 16th-century Ottoman houses filled with furniture, rugs and antiquities. Both are walking stops where the guide explains what you're seeing. Then comes Khan El Khalili Bazaar, the sprawling market in the old city where you have time to walk the alleys and pick up souvenirs: papyrus, spices, textiles, the usual goods. The tour includes a stop at a papyrus institute to learn about the traditional paper-making process before heading back to Ain Sokhna.
An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group, and a specialized guide who speaks your language narrates throughout. All entry fees and taxes are included in the price. The day is long but the stops break it into manageable pieces, and the felucca ride in the middle gives you a rest from walking.
