The experience
Your guide meets you at the El Sokhna port exit in the morning and drives you to Cairo: a two-hour journey by air-conditioned vehicle. The Egyptian Museum is your first stop, where you'll walk through galleries holding more than 120,000 artifacts, including Tutankhamun's golden coffin. From there the route heads to the Giza plateau, where you explore the three standing pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus on foot, on horseback or by camel, depending on your preference. The grounds take roughly two hours to cover at your own pace.
Next is the Great Sphinx: a limestone figure with a human head and a lion's body, carved from a quarry that once supplied stone for the Pyramid of Cheops. You'll spend about 20 to 30 minutes at the Sphinx and its surrounding temple. If the schedule allows, the guide can take you to the Cairo Bazaar before the drive back to El Sokhna. Lunch and all entrance fees are included. The full day runs 12 to 14 hours from port to port.
At the Nile River, you have a choice: take a paid boat trip on the water or walk the banks for free. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two additional languages, and the tour welcomes children from age four.
