The experience
You arrive at El-Sokhna Port and a guide holding a sign with your name meets you at the gate. From there, a private air-conditioned vehicle takes you on a two-hour scenic drive to Cairo, with a rest stop if you need one. The day opens at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the first museum in the Middle East built to tell the story of ancient Egypt from its earliest days. The mummies' hall holds Egypt's most famous kings and queens: the centerpiece of the collection and the reason most visitors come to this museum first.
After lunch at a local restaurant, your guide escorts you to the Citadel of Salah el-Din, a 12th-century fortress built to defend Cairo from Crusaders. The walls enclose several museums: the Military Museum traces centuries of Egypt's military history, and the Police Museum offers rare glimpses into law and order across the ages. The real draw is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also called the Alabaster Mosque for its gleaming limestone interior and exterior. Its vast domes, slender minarets and intricate detailing make it one of Cairo's most recognizable Islamic landmarks.
The tour ends at Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, a sprawling souk where artisans sell handmade brassware, textiles, copper, perfumes, leather, silver and gold. You wander the lively alleys at your own pace while your guide stays with you, then return to El-Sokhna Port by late afternoon. All entrance fees, the vehicle, lunch and bottled water during the drive are included. Tipping is your choice.
