The experience

The day starts with a meet-and-greet at El Sokhna Port, then a three-hour drive to Cairo in an air-conditioned vehicle. The route includes a rest stop if you need one. Once in the city, you walk among the three main pyramids (Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus), and stand in front of the Great Sphinx, the limestone statue that has watched the plateau for nearly five thousand years. The tour also takes you to the Valley Temple, the mortuary complex attached to Chephren's pyramid where priests once prepared the pharaoh's body for the afterlife.

After the pyramids, lunch arrives at a local restaurant. Then you move on to the Citadel of Salah El Din, the fortress that has dominated Cairo's skyline since the twelfth century, and visit the Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque inside its walls. The afternoon shifts to Khan El Khalili, the bazaar in Islamic Cairo where the same shops have sold brassware, copper, perfumes, leather, silver and gold for centuries. Your guide walks with you through the district, then escorts you back to the ship as evening falls.

The tour runs twelve hours door to door. All entry fees, lunch and bottled water are included. You can book this as a private guided tour with just your group, or join a shared departure with other travelers. A guide speaks your language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of six others. The vehicle is modern and air-conditioned, and the tour is wheelchair accessible.
