The experience
The day starts with a 2-hour drive from Ain Sokhna across the desert to the Giza Plateau. Once there, you stand in front of the Great Pyramids built for Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, and face the Great Sphinx: the colossal half-lion, half-human figure that has guarded the sands for millennia. Your guide walks you through the scale and history of these structures, the only surviving wonder of the ancient world.
After the pyramids, you move to the Papyrus Institute to watch and learn the ancient art of papyrus making, then browse the Oriental Bazaars for souvenirs. A local lunch follows, giving you time to rest before the second half of the day. You then visit Tahrir Square and spend time at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts including treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun. The museum is Cairo's major repository of ancient Egyptian art and objects.
The return journey is a comfortable 2-hour drive back to Ain Sokhna, allowing you to process the day's sights. Your guide speaks English, French, German or Arabic, and the vehicle is air-conditioned throughout. Pickup from your Ain Sokhna hotel is included, as are all taxes and fees.
