The Experience

If you have a day free in Sharm el Sheikh and want to see Luxor's major sites without arranging flights and guides separately, this tour handles the logistics. You're picked up from your hotel around 4:30 am and driven to Sharm el Sheikh airport for a one-hour Egypt Air flight departing at 6 am. A German-speaking guide meets you in Luxor at 7 am and drives you west across the Nile to the Valley of the Kings, where you visit three tombs carved into the rock. The route then takes you to the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahary, a limestone structure built into the cliffs, and a brief stop at the Colossi of Memnon—two massive seated statues of Amenhotep III that stand alone on the plain.

After lunch, you cross back to the eastern bank to explore Karnak Temple, a sprawling complex of sanctuaries, pylons and columns that served as the religious center of ancient Thebes. The guide walks you through the temple grounds and shows you the sacred lake. By late afternoon you're driven back to Luxor airport for the return flight to Sharm el Sheikh, arriving at your hotel in the evening. The full day is about 20 hours from pickup to drop-off, with most of the time spent on the ground in Luxor rather than in transit.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are all entry fees to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak Temple. Lunch is provided during the day. You travel in an air-conditioned bus both at the start and end of the day, and the guide speaks German (English, Italian, French and one additional language are also available). Infants can bring a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children.

Top questions

What's the actual time I spend looking at the tombs and temples, versus traveling?

The Valley of the Kings visit includes three tombs; Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon are separate stops on the west bank. Karnak Temple on the east bank is the largest single site. Most of the 20-hour day is spent on the ground at these locations rather than in transit, with the two flights (each about an hour) and driving between sites accounting for the rest.

Do I need to speak German, or will the guide speak English?

The tour operates with German-speaking guides as standard, but English, Italian, French and one additional language are available—confirm your language preference when you book.

What happens if I'm not fit enough to walk around temples and tombs all day?

The itinerary suits all physical fitness levels. You'll be walking through the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and Karnak, but the pace is guided and you can move at your own speed. The air-conditioned vehicle provides rest between sites, and lunch is included midday.

Is the flight included in the price, or do I pay separately?

Both domestic flights—Sharm el Sheikh to Luxor in the morning and Luxor back to Sharm el Sheikh in the evening—are included in the tour price, along with all temple and tomb entry fees.

Can I bring my three-year-old on this tour?

Yes, children from age 3 are welcome. Infants can bring a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available in the vehicle if you need one.
