The experience

What makes this different from a standard desert tour is that you're the one controlling the quad bike instead of watching from a vehicle. You get picked up from your hotel in Hurghada, Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Safaga or Soma Bay, then head to the private quad station where you test drive the bike and learn the controls before the ride starts. The guide walks you through everything you need to know, so even first-time riders leave confident.

Once you're on the dunes, the 45-minute ride is the core of the activity. You're navigating the terrain yourself, feeling the speed and the sand shift under the tires. The desert passes fast, and the adrenaline builds as you climb and descend the rolling dunes. After about an hour of riding and travel, you reach the Bedouin village, where the pace changes completely. You sit down, drink traditional herbal tea, and watch the way the village works. A camel ride follows, giving you a slower, older way of moving through the same landscape you just tore through on the quad.

The whole outing takes about 3 hours from pickup to drop-off. Helmet and mineral water are provided, and the guide stays with you the whole time.
