The Experience

You're picked up from your Hurghada hotel in an air-conditioned van and driven into the Red Sea Desert, where the night sky has some of the clearest conditions on Earth. The jeep carries you across the sand to a camel, where you ride the traditional way before climbing a small mountain to watch the sun drop toward the horizon. As light fades, you settle around a fire for a barbecue buffet—grilled chicken, beef, rice, salad, cheese, bread and dessert—with soft drinks and Bedouin tea included.

Once the stars emerge, a professional astronomer leads you to a telescope set up in the observation area. You look through the lens to see planets and distant stars, and the guide explains what you're seeing and how to locate constellations on any night of the year. The desert's darkness and distance from city lights mean the stars are bright enough to make out detail, and if conditions align, you might spot a shooting star. The guide answers questions about Saturn, what binoculars can reveal, and the mechanics of the night sky itself.

After stargazing ends, you drive back to your hotel. The whole experience runs about six hours from pickup to return, so it fits into an evening without consuming a full day. Bedouin bread-making happens during the trip, and bottled water is provided throughout.
