The Experience

“That’s older than anything in Giza,” our guide Hossam said as we stood blinking in the dusty morning light at Saqqara. I could still smell yesterday’s bread from a stall outside the gate. The Step Pyramid just loomed there—kind of lopsided but proud—while Hossam traced his finger over a wall of faded blue hieroglyphs. Inside one tomb, it felt cool and close, like the air was holding its breath. My shoes squeaked on the sanded stone and I tried to picture priests walking here thousands of years ago. I didn’t expect to feel small, but I did.

The drive to Giza was noisy—honking cars, someone selling oranges at a red light—and then suddenly you’re there: three giant pyramids just sitting on the edge of Cairo like they’ve always been waiting for you. We stopped for photos (everyone does), but honestly it’s hard to fit them all in one shot unless you lie down in the sand. I still think about the Sphinx’s face—half eroded but somehow gentle—and how quiet it felt standing there even with other groups nearby. Lunch was koshery at a little spot where they handed us steaming bowls and smiled when we fumbled our coins. Memphis was last; Ramses II lying on his back under glass, toes bigger than my head.
