The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup in Cairo and a flight to Luxor: no long road journey, just the sites themselves. Once there, a live guide walks you through Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex in ancient Egypt, built over centuries and dedicated to Amon, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. You move next to Luxor Temple to see its courtyard, the granite statues of Ramses the Great and the Avenue of Sphinxes that once connected the two temples.
After lunch at a local restaurant, the tour heads to Valley of the Kings, where the pharaohs were buried in rock-cut tombs. Then comes Temple of Hatshepsut, built by the only woman to rule ancient Egypt as pharaoh, followed by the Colossi of Memnon: two massive statues of Amenhotep III that still stand on the plain. You'll have an hour of free time built into the day before the return flight to Cairo and drop-off at your hotel.
The whole outing runs 12 to 14 hours door-to-door. Flights, all entry fees, lunch and hotel pickup are included. You bring only yourself and a camera. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and several other languages, so you can book in whichever one you speak.
