The Experience

I’ll be honest — our morning in Cairo didn’t start like I’d pictured. The driver called to say he was running five minutes late (Cairo traffic, right?), so we stood outside the hotel watching the city wake up. There was this faint smell of bread baking from a nearby shop, and a cat darted between parked cars. Our guide, Hossam, arrived apologizing with a grin and somehow made us laugh about it straight away. He handed us cold water bottles before we even got in the van — small thing, but it felt thoughtful.

First stop was Baron Palace. I’d seen photos online but nothing really prepares you for how odd and almost out-of-place it looks — all these Hindu-inspired carvings in the middle of Heliopolis. Hossam told us about Baron Empain (I kept mispronouncing his name; he just smiled), and pointed out details I would’ve missed: lions on the roof, stained glass that caught the morning light just so. Inside, it was cooler than outside — stone floors underfoot, echoes bouncing off empty halls. There’s something eerie about it, honestly.

Abdeen Palace felt like stepping into another world entirely — gold everywhere, clocks in every corner (Hossam joked that even the clocks are royal here). We weren’t allowed to touch anything but you could almost feel the weight of history in those rooms. At one point I caught a whiff of old wood polish mixed with something floral — maybe from the gardens? Lunch after was at this local spot nearby; I tried koshari for the first time and probably ate too much but no regrets.

The last stop was Manial Palace Museum. By then my feet were tired but I didn’t want to miss anything. The mix of Islamic tiles and European furniture is kind of wild — like someone couldn’t decide what century they wanted to live in. Hossam showed us his favorite courtyard where sunlight hit the mosaics just right. We took some awkward group photos (I’m not great at posing) but looking back now, I’m glad we did.
