The Experience

We rolled out from Giza just after sunrise—our driver weaving through Cairo’s early chaos while I blinked away sleep. The city faded fast, replaced by stretches of sandy nothingness that made me wonder how anyone ever found their way here thousands of years ago. Our guide, Hossam, handed me a bottle of water and grinned like he’d seen this half-awake face before. “First stop: Saqqara,” he said. I tried to picture the Step Pyramid but mostly just felt the dry morning air sneaking in through the cracked window.

Walking up to Djoser’s Step Pyramid was stranger than I expected—there’s this low hum of wind and the smell of sun-warmed stone everywhere. Hossam pointed out the layers in the pyramid’s sides, tracing them with his finger as if he’d built them himself. Inside Teti’s pyramid, we ducked through a passage so narrow my backpack scraped both walls (I’m still not sure how ancient priests managed it). There were faint carvings on the walls—hieroglyphs that looked like they’d been scratched in yesterday. I caught myself running my hand along cool limestone and thinking about all those centuries stacked up in silence.

We stopped at the Mastaba of Ti next—Hossam laughed when I tried to say “mastaba” right (I definitely didn’t). The reliefs showed people fishing and baking bread; somehow more real than all those pharaoh statues you see in museums. After that came Dahshur: first the Bent Pyramid with its weird angles (it really does look like someone changed their mind halfway), then the Red Pyramid where we climbed inside and my legs nearly gave out from crouching so long. It smelled like dust and old secrets in there.

Memphis was our last stop—a patch of green trees and kids playing football around broken columns. The statue of Ramses II was massive, lying down like he just needed a nap after ruling for ages. There was an alabaster sphinx too; smaller than I thought but somehow friendlier? On the drive back to Cairo, my head buzzed with images: sunlight on stone, Hossam’s stories about kings who wanted to live forever, that dry desert wind that still clings to my clothes now. Sometimes history feels far away until you’re standing right where it happened.
