The experience

The day starts at your hotel in Cairo or Giza, where a driver picks you up in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Saqqara comes first, 27 kilometers southwest of the city. You walk the Step Pyramid built for Pharaoh Zoser: the oldest stone structure in Egypt and a turning point in how pyramids were designed. The site also holds the Pyramid of Teti, the Pyramid of Unas (the smallest Old Kingdom pyramid but the first to carry Pyramid Texts, spells inscribed into the burial chambers for the pharaoh's afterlife), and the Mastaba of Ti, a tomb decorated with scenes of daily life in ancient Egypt.

From Saqqara, the vehicle takes you south to Dahshur, about 40 kilometers from Cairo. The Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid stand here, two of Egypt's oldest, largest and best-preserved pyramids, built between 2613 and 2589 BCE. Both are still largely intact, which sets them apart from many others on the Giza plateau.

The final stop is Memphis, the ancient capital that dates back to 3100 BCE. You see the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. After Memphis, the driver brings you back to your hotel. The whole tour takes around five hours, though traffic can add 30 to 45 minutes to the schedule: the operator asks that you arrive on time at pickup, as the group may depart early if everyone is assembled.
