The Experience

The first day centers on water and tombs. You cycle to Juba Spring, called Cleopatra's Spring, a natural pool fed by an ancient aquifer where you can swim or rest, then explore Gebel al-Mawta, a hillside carved with rock-cut tombs from the 26th Dynasty and Ptolemaic-Roman periods. A local guide walks you through the faded paintings inside, explaining the afterlife rituals and the Ammonite priests who made Siwa an oracle destination. The turquoise salt lakes, harvested for salt since antiquity, come next. These pools sustained Siwa's trade routes to Libya and Sudan and remain central to oasis life.

Day two is the Great Sand Sea. You travel by shared 4x4 to the sprawling dune landscape on the Sahara's edge, once a route for ancient caravans, where you sandboard down slopes and watch the sun sink below the dunes. A Bedouin host prepares a bonfire dinner of BBQ or tagine, paired with Siwan tea and date-based drinks like lebisa, while storytelling unfolds under the stars. Before this, you visit the Temple of Amoun, a 6th-century BCE limestone shrine dedicated to the oracle of Amun-Ra, the site Alexander the Great visited in 331 BCE seeking divine counsel.

The final morning takes you through Shali Fort, a 13th-century mud-brick stronghold built of kershef (mud and salt) that once protected Siwa's Berber-speaking residents. A guide explains the fortress's labyrinthine alleys, its role in community life, and Siwa's matrilineal customs. You then have free time to wander the market on foot, watching palm weaving and engaging with artisans selling handmade crafts: a window into centuries-old traditions before departure.

Top questions

What are the rock-cut tombs at Gebel al-Mawta, and what do they show about Siwa's history?

Gebel al-Mawta is a hillside carved with burial sites from the 26th Dynasty (around 664–525 BCE) and later Ptolemaic-Roman periods, once used by Siwa's elite. The tombs contain faded paintings depicting afterlife rituals and connect Siwa to its role as an oracle destination where the Ammonite priests held spiritual authority.

Can I swim in Cleopatra's Spring and the salt lakes?

Yes. Cleopatra's Spring (Juba Spring) is a natural pool fed by an ancient aquifer where you can swim or relax. The turquoise salt lakes are also swimmable. They've been harvested for salt since ancient times and remain vital to oasis life and water-sharing customs.

What happens during the Great Sand Sea safari on day two?

You travel by shared 4x4 to the dune landscape and sandboard down slopes, then gather for a bonfire dinner of BBQ or tagine prepared by Bedouin hosts, accompanied by Siwan tea and date-based drinks. Bedouin storytelling and herbal teas under the stars complete the evening.

What is Shali Fort, and why does it matter to Siwa?

Shali Fort is a 13th-century mud-brick fortress built of kershef (mud and salt) that protected Siwa's Berber-speaking residents from raiders. Its labyrinthine alleys fostered community life until the 20th century and reflect Siwa's matrilineal customs and social structure.

Where do I stay, and what meals are included?

You stay two nights in a traditional mud-brick eco-lodge reflecting local architecture. Accommodation is included. Dinners feature chef-curated Siwan cuisine prepared by Bedouin hosts, including the bonfire meal on day two. Lunch meals and extra drinks are not included.

Is transportation arranged, or do I need my own car?

Transportation is included in the tour. You travel by shared 4x4 to the Great Sand Sea to reduce environmental impact, and cycling and walking are part of the daily itinerary. Pickup is included depending on your selected option.
