The Experience
The tour leaves Cairo and heads two hours into the Western Desert to Fayoum, where the whole landscape was once an ancient ocean floor. Whale Valley holds the best-preserved skeletons and bones of whales, sharks and other marine creatures from forty million years ago, still being excavated. You walk among the fossils and visit the museum of marine life and recent finds on the same site. The guide explains the pre-historic, ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Ptolemaic and Islamic history layered across the region.
After Whale Valley, the route moves to Magic Lake and Qaroon Lake, where you have lunch. Magic Lake sits in the desert with its own unique history and local stories. Qaroon Lake is the larger body of water nearby. Between the two lakes you can try sandboarding on the dunes next to Magic Lake. Both sites are part of the Fayoum oasis landscape, and the tour also includes a stop at the Fayoum Greco-Roman Museum.
A professional driver operates the safari Jeep throughout the day, and your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of four other languages. The tour includes hotel pickup and return to Cairo, bottled water, parking fees and fuel surcharge. Sandboarding gear is provided. Entrance fees to Whale Valley, the museum and the lakes are separate.
