The experience

You get picked up from your hotel in Cabarete, Sosua or Puerto Plata and driven through the countryside to Punta Rucia on the coast. At Playa Ensenada, you board a speedboat that cuts across turquoise water to Cayo Arena: the local name for Paradise Island. The island sits inside Monte Cristi National Park, a protected stretch of reef and mangrove that most day visitors to the region never reach.

Once ashore on white sand, you have the choice to sunbathe or join the guided snorkeling tour. The gear is provided, and you'll move through shallow coral where tropical fish move in schools. The reef here is close enough to shore that you don't spend hours in transit. You're in the water within minutes of landing. Fresh fruit and drinks arrive on the island while you're still there. Before heading back to the mainland, the speedboat takes you through the mangrove channels: a narrow passage where the trees form a tunnel overhead and the water stays calm enough to see down into it.

Lunch is a typical Dominican meal served in Punta Rucia. On the return drive, the tour stops at a local market where you can pick up produce or crafts before heading back to your hotel. The whole day runs between nine and eleven hours from pickup to drop-off.
