The experience

Transportation picks you up at your hotel or a fixed point starting at 6:30 AM, then heads straight to Punta Rucia on the north coast. The drive takes you through Puerto Plata toward the departure point for Cayo Arena. Once at the water, you board for the short crossing to the island itself: a tiny coral formation sitting alone in the ocean, home to sergeant major, angelfish, damselfish, surgeon fish, yellow tail snapper, crabs, octopus, sponges and coral formations. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and the reef is the main event of the day.

Lunch is served on the island or back on the boat, depending on the day's conditions. The tour includes soda and alcoholic beverages throughout. On the return journey, there is a stop at a local workshop where you learn how Dominican tobacco, MaMaJuana (a traditional herbal drink) and precious stones like amber, larimar and sapphire are made and sourced. This stop breaks up the drive home and gives context to what those materials actually are.

The full outing runs eight to ten hours from pickup to drop-off. An air-conditioned vehicle keeps the drive comfortable, and WiFi is available on board. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and additional languages, so communication is straightforward regardless of your background.
