Step-by-step itinerary

Full day tour to Cayo Arena

  • Pick up from Cabarete and Sosua
  • Drive over two hours to Punta Rucia
  • Take speed boat to Cayo Arena
  • Snorkel and explore underwater world
  • Swim and take pictures at Cayo Arena

The experience

The day starts at 7am with pickup from your hotel in Puerto Plata, Cabarete or Sosua. The drive to Punta Rucia takes just over two hours in an air-conditioned vehicle, following the coast road north. Once you reach Punta Rucia's beach, you board a speedboat for the final run out to Cayo Arena: a small island of sand and shallow reef in open water, roughly 25 minutes offshore. The boat ride itself is part of the draw: you cross clear water and watch the island grow from a speck to a landing.

Cayo Arena is built for snorkeling. The reef sits in water shallow enough to stand in, and the fish are unafraid. You'll see schools of small colored fish, parrotfish, and other reef species moving through the water around you. The snorkeling equipment is provided, and you have free time to explore at your own pace: some people stay in the water for hours, others take breaks on the sand to dry off and rest. Swimming in the clear water is part of it too. The island has no shade or facilities, so the water is where you cool down between snorkeling sessions.

Lunch is served on the island, and drinks are included throughout the day. The return journey follows the same route: speedboat back to Punta Rucia, then the drive back to your hotel, arriving in the late afternoon. The whole trip runs seven to eight hours from pickup to drop-off.

Is this one for you?Book this trip if you want a full day on the water with time to snorkel at your own pace rather than a quick stop. The long drive and boat ride mean you're committed to the island for most of the day, which is exactly what makes the snorkeling unhurried. You're not watching the clock or sharing the reef with a large rotating group.
