The experience
The day starts with a boat ride through the mangroves of Estero, where you drift past the tangle of roots and watch the birds and fish that live inside the ecosystem. The water is calm and narrow here, nothing like the open sea. Then the boat heads out to Cayo Arena, a small sandbank in the middle of shallow, clear water. The reef around it is what makes the place work: you wade in with snorkeling gear and spend hours watching parrotfish, sergeant majors and smaller reef fish move through the coral. The water stays shallow enough to stand in, and the sand beneath is white and fine.
Lunch is Dominican food served on the island or back on the boat, with drinks included throughout the day. The tour runs six to seven hours total, which gives you real time in the water rather than a quick stop. Transport picks you up from your hotel or a meeting point in Playa la Ensenada and brings you back the same way. A guide who speaks English or Spanish stays with the group and points out what you're seeing underwater and in the mangroves.
Is this one for you?The tour includes transport and pickup, so you don't need a car or your own way to the coast. The full day, six to seven hours, gives you real time in the water and the mangroves rather than a rushed visit, and everything from lunch to snorkeling gear is packed in.
