The experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel in a safari truck that takes you to the ranch where your vehicle waits. Once you're behind the wheel, you drive on exotic roads through the jungle toward Macao beach, where you'll have 35 minutes to walk the sand and water. The route then cuts inland through remote villages and across coffee, banana, tobacco and cocoa plantations: the kind of landscape most visitors never reach because they're not driving themselves.

At the plantations, you stop to taste fresh coffee and cocoa straight from the source. The final leg takes you to a natural cave with crystal-clear water for a swim before the safari truck brings you back to your hotel. The whole outing runs four hours, which means the day holds together without eating into your evening plans.

You pick your vehicle at checkout: a buggy or Polaris, each available as a two-person or four-person rig. A guide rides along and speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of two other languages. Bottled water comes with you the whole way.
