The experience
The day starts with a two-hour drive from your hotel toward Hato Mayor province, passing rice, coffee, cocoa and tropical fruit plantations while your guide explains Dominican culture and farming. A light breakfast stop breaks the journey before you reach Los Haitises National Park on a dirt road through the town of Sabana de la Mar. The park's name comes from the Taíno word for highlands, and what you see from the water justifies it: you'll board a small boat wearing a life jacket and navigate a red mangrove forest path into San Lorenzo Bay, where limestone islands called Mogotes rise steeply from the water. More than 700 plant species grow on them, and the wetlands draw manatees, dolphins and crustaceans into view.
Inside the park you'll explore caves (Cueva de la Arena and Cueva de la Linea among them), where the Taíno sheltered centuries ago and where pirates later hid. The cave walls carry Indian drawings 750 years old. After the boat tour ends at the main port, you'll head to Paraíso Caño Hondo, a natural spring complex at the park's edge that Forbes Magazine ranked among the world's ten best ecological destinations. Lunch is an open buffet of typical Dominican food and cocktails served in the open air, and afterward you can swim in the natural pools built into and around the stone formations before boarding the bus for the return leg.
The route back to Punta Cana passes through Miches, where you'll stop to climb Montaña Redonda, an isolated 1,000-foot mountain that sits almost on the shoreline. You'll ride up in open-air safari-style trucks, and from the summit the views stretch for miles across lush green hills and turquoise ocean. Hammocks and seats wait at the top, and photographers are on-site if you want to capture the moment: swinging from a rope over the view or posing with a broom. Your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Punta Cana once the light fades.
