The experience

The day starts in Los Haitises National Park, where you spend three hours with a guide exploring the mangroves, red and white species of trees, and bird islands by boat. The caves here hold lithography from the Taíno people who lived in the region. You walk inside to see the pictographs preserved on the walls. After the park, the boat sails through the bay toward Cayo Levantado, a white-sand island known for turquoise water.

Lunch is served on the beach at Cayo Levantado: grilled fish, fried chicken, moors with coconut, pasta salad, bread, green salad, water, coke and Sprite. After eating, you swim in the water in front of where you sat. The tour also includes a 15- to 20-minute stop in Samana for photos of the colorful houses, the Samana sign and a stone whale sculpture. The full day runs seven and a half hours from start to finish.

Hotel pickup is included, and the guide is available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and two more languages. Children from age one are welcome, though infants must sit on an adult's lap. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy.
