The Experience

The first thing I remember is the low hum of the boat motor echoing off those limestone towers in Los Haitises, with birds darting overhead—one of them a Ridgway’s Hawk, our guide Miguel said. The air smelled like salt and wet leaves, and every time we drifted past the mangroves, something rustled. Miguel pointed out old Taino drawings in one of the caves; I tried to snap a photo but honestly just stood there for a minute, thinking about people painting here hundreds of years ago. It’s hard to imagine until you’re right up close.

After winding through Sabana de la Mar (I saw fishermen hauling nets, waving like they knew us), we reached Yanigua Waterfall. There was this earthy scent—wet clay and cocoa beans drying somewhere nearby. We got to try fresh Dominican chocolate and coffee, which tasted richer than I expected. Li laughed when I tried to say “cacao” in Spanish—probably butchered it. The waterfall itself wasn’t crowded; we just let cold water hit our shoulders while some kids played nearby. Later, someone smeared clay on my arm for the “spa”—it felt cool and gritty, not fancy but kind of perfect after sweating all morning.

I still think about that view from Tarzan’s Treehouse—125 feet up, looking out over green valleys that didn’t seem to end. Lunch was a big buffet (rice, chicken, plantains—nothing too fussy), and there was cold soda waiting. On the ride back toward Santo Domingo, everyone got quiet for a bit; maybe tired or just letting it all sink in. Sometimes you don’t need words after a day like that.
