Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Los Haitises National Park by boat
- Boat trip through mangroves
- Visit Los Haitises National Park
- Explore Cueva de la Arena cave
- Learn indigenous history in caves
- Experience Ashen Owl Detachment strait
The experience
You start with hotel pickup in the Cap Cana area, then head to the dock where the boat departs for Los Haitises. The park sits on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic and is one of the most visited protected areas in the country, not for crowds, but because the landscape genuinely looks prehistoric. Scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed here, and the comparison is not marketing: the towering limestone formations, dense mangrove forest and river channels create a setting that feels removed from the modern world.
The boat takes you up a 2-kilometer river where you observe mangroves from the water, then arrives at the first of three caves. Cueva de la Arena sits next to a beach and can only be reached by boat. Inside, you see Taíno decorations and learn about the indigenous people who used these caves centuries ago. The second cave, named for an old railway line that once transported bananas and rice past its entrance, holds more pre-Columbian art. The third, the Ashen Owl Detachment, is a narrow strait between rocks: an optional adventure if you want it, but not required to see what makes the park worth the trip.
Lunch and snacks are included, and your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two additional languages depending on availability. The full day runs seven to eight hours from pickup to return, which gives you time on the water and in the caves without rushing through either.
