Summary

Samana bay adventure with waterfall hike and island swim

You’ll cross Samana Bay by boat from Punta Cana with a local guide, swim at Bacardi Island’s white beaches, and hike (or ride) up to El Limón Waterfall for a dip in its cool pool. Expect fresh food, friendly faces, and moments that linger long after you’re home.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“You’ll want to keep your shoes dry for the horses,” our guide José grinned as we shuffled off the bus in Miches. I’d barely woken up when we left Punta Cana, but by the time we reached the little dock, the air was thick with salt and laughter — everyone trying to remember each other’s names. The boat ride across Samana Bay was louder than I expected, gulls overhead and kids pointing at the water hoping for whales (not winter yet, but you never know). I kept thinking about how blue everything looked — not just the sea but even people’s shirts drying on lines near the beach.

Bacardi Island felt like something out of a movie — all those palm trees leaning over water so clear you could see your toes. Lunch was simple: grilled fish, rice, and fruit that tasted like sunshine. I tried to ask one of the cooks about her coconut recipe; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Spanish — probably butchered it. We had an hour or so to swim or just lie back under a tree. There was this breeze that made everything smell faintly sweet and green. I almost fell asleep listening to someone strumming a guitar nearby.

The real adventure started after that — riding up into the hills toward El Limón Waterfall. The trail was muddy in spots (bring old sneakers if you can), and José pointed out cacao trees along the way. You could hear the waterfall before you saw it — this low thunder behind all the birdsong. Standing under El Limón itself felt unreal; cold spray on my face, slippery rocks underfoot, everyone shouting and laughing as they jumped in. I didn’t expect to feel so awake after such a long day, but there’s something about cold river water that does it.

On the drive back through Samana’s villages, windows down, I watched kids waving at our bus and thought about how different life feels here — slower somehow, but brighter too. Even now, days later, I still think about that first jump into the pool below El Limón. It’s hard to explain why it sticks with me… maybe just because it felt real.
