The experience
Eight hours covers three separate experiences, each one a different landscape. The day starts on the water in Samaná Bay, where humpback whales spend their winter months. You'll watch them breach, tail-slap and display the behaviors males use to attract mates, and if conditions are right, hear them singing underwater. The whales are there to breed and birth calves in the warm Caribbean, so mothers and calves move through the bay alongside the more acrobatic males. This is not a guarantee (the ocean sets the terms), but the season runs January through March, when the whales are most active.
After the boat returns, you head to Cayo Levantado, a small island known locally as Bacardi Island for the palms that appeared in rum advertisements. The beach is powder-white sand and the water is clear enough to see the bottom. You'll have time to swim and rest before the next leg. Then a safari-style drive takes you across Samaná to a typical Dominican ranch, where lunch, a buffet of local food, waits before you ride. The horseback portion lasts roughly thirty minutes, moving through plantations toward the waterfall itself. El Limón drops 45 meters into a pool you can wade into and swim in once you arrive.
A professional guide leads the entire route and handles logistics. You move between sites by van. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages depending on the option you choose at checkout. Infants can come along (they sit on an adult's lap), and the itinerary suits all fitness levels, though the horseback section is not optional. It's the way to reach the waterfall. Lunch and snacks are included, as is round-trip hotel pickup from Punta Cana.

Is this one for you?The fixed itinerary packs three distinct landscapes (ocean, island and waterfall) into one eight-hour day, which means you see more of the region than a single-stop tour allows. The horseback ride is the only way to reach El Limón, so if you prefer not to ride, look for a tour that ends at the waterfall by foot or van instead.
