The experience
The tour starts with a 45-minute drive from the port in an air-conditioned vehicle, taking you past Puerto Plata city and into the lush Dominican countryside toward the Adventure Park. Your guide will be with you throughout and speaks English, Spanish, French or German. Once you arrive, basic riding instructions are provided before you head out on horseback through the scenic tropical landscape: no prior experience needed, though you should have at least a moderate level of fitness for the ride itself.
The horseback portion is the centerpiece, but the day builds around three distinct stops. After riding, you'll visit the squirrel monkey habitat where the animals will jump, climb and interact with you directly. You feed them and learn about their behavior and habitat while taking photos. Next comes the parrot garden, where you walk among Macaws, Cockatoos, African Greys, Toucans and Flamingos. Between stops, there's an optional chance to purchase authentic Dominican coffee, chocolate or cigars.
Lunch is a home-cooked Dominican meal included in the price (rice, beans, chicken, fried plantains, vegetables and salad) served at the Adventure Park with a bar where you can buy cold beverages (alcoholic drinks available for travelers 21 and older). One bottle of water is provided free and can be refilled as many times as you need. Round-trip transportation from the port is included. The bus departs 45 minutes after your ship arrives.
Is this one for you?The five-hour duration and moderate fitness requirement mean this suits riders who can spend a full morning or afternoon away from the port and are comfortable in the saddle for a countryside ride. Children from age 3 are welcome, though only those old enough to ride independently will participate in the horseback portion.
