The Experience
I’ll be honest—I signed up for this Dominican Republic day trip mostly because I was curious about how coffee and cocoa are actually made. But it turned out to be so much more than that. The drive out from town was bumpy and kind of loud (Dominican radio is its own adventure), but when we stopped at the first little workshop, the smell of roasting beans just hit me. Our guide, Rosa, handed me a tiny cup—no sugar, just pure coffee—and it tasted almost earthy. I’m not usually into black coffee but here it felt right.
We watched how coconut oil gets pressed by hand—so much slower than I thought—and then tried rolling our own cigars at this family-run place. I definitely butchered mine; the guy next to me laughed and said something in Spanish I didn’t catch, but it made everyone smile. The air smelled like tobacco leaves and sweet chocolate from the next room where they were grinding cocoa beans. It’s funny how those smells stick with you.
After lunch (rice, chicken, plantains—simple but honestly delicious), we visited a small school nearby. The kids were shy at first but warmed up fast when we passed out some notebooks and pencils our group had brought along. One girl showed me her drawing of a palm tree; she was so proud. It made me think about how different daily life is here compared to home—you know?
