The Experience

“Hold on tight — this part gets bumpy!” our guide shouted over the engine noise, grinning like he’d done this a thousand times. I could smell the earth before I saw it; that damp, sweet scent you only get after a quick Caribbean rain. We’d barely left Bayahibe when the road turned to mud and laughter. My hands were already sticky from the steering wheel, and honestly, I was kind of glad for the helmet — not just for safety but to hide my ridiculous hair after ten minutes in the wind.

The first stop was at a batey — I’d heard about these sugar cane communities but never thought I’d walk through one with someone like José pointing out how everything worked. He handed me a chunk of raw cane, still cool from the morning shade. It tasted grassy and sweet, nothing like what you buy at home. Kids waved as we passed; one little girl stuck her tongue out at us and then giggled when she realized we saw her.
