The Experience

The first thing I remember is the weird hum of the Segway under my feet — almost like standing on a friendly robot. Our guide, Jakub, met us right outside our hotel (which felt fancy for me) and drove us out of the city center to a spot where you’re actually allowed to ride these things. I was nervous at first. There’s this wobbly moment when you step on, but Jakub just grinned and said, “Don’t fight it — let it balance you.” He was right. After five minutes of practice, I was gliding around like some futuristic mall cop.

Ladronka Park was all green and quiet, except for a few locals jogging or walking their dogs. The air smelled like cut grass and something sweet — maybe linden trees? We zipped past a little playground where some kids waved at us (I tried waving back but nearly steered into a bush). Jakub pointed out an old monastery with its own brewery; he told us monks still make beer there. We stopped for a minute and I tried saying “klášter” in Czech — he laughed so hard he nearly dropped his phone. The whole thing felt oddly peaceful compared to the crowded Old Town.

The best view came near Strahov Stadium — this massive concrete bowl that could fit entire towns inside it. Jakub explained how it once held 250,000 people for gymnastics shows. Standing there with the wind tugging at my jacket, Prague spread out in the distance, I felt tiny but also sort of lucky to be seeing this side of the city most tourists miss. On the way back, Jakub gave us tips for places to eat that weren’t tourist traps (I still think about that goulash). If you want a day trip in Prague that doesn’t feel rushed or staged — and includes hotel pickup so you don’t get lost — this Segway ride is weirdly perfect.
