The experience
I didn’t expect to feel so quiet after standing in that crypt under St. Cyril and Methodius Church. Our guide, Petr, unlocked the heavy door and it was suddenly cool and still inside. Just the sound of our shoes on stone. He told us about those seven paratroopers, how they held out for hours down here. I kept running my hand along the rough wall, thinking about what it must’ve been like. Petr didn’t rush us. He let us sit with it for a minute or two before we went back up into the sunlight.
We drove through Prague’s neighborhoods to this ordinary-looking curve in the road: honestly, if you didn’t know, you’d pass right by. That’s where Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated during Operation Anthropoid. Petr pointed out exactly where the car stopped and how it all unfolded. There’s traffic now and people walking dogs, but I could almost hear that moment echoing back. He even showed us some old photos on his phone, not sure why but that made it feel more real.
The drive out to Lidice took maybe twenty minutes, past fields and airport signs. The air smelled different there, grassier, emptier somehow.
