The Experience

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice at Bastei Bridge to be the smell — kind of piney, almost damp, like the forest was still waking up. Our guide, Jana, handed out a quick snack before we set off (she called it “second breakfast” and winked). The bridge itself is stranger in person: all those sandstone towers poking through mist, and you can hear birds echoing under your feet if you pause. I kept stopping to touch the stone — it’s rougher than it looks in photos. Jana told us how this spot used to be a lookout for old castle guards. I tried to picture them shivering here centuries ago, but honestly I was just glad for my jacket.

The drive into Germany felt shorter than I thought — maybe because Jana kept telling little stories about Saxony and pointing out villages that looked straight out of a fairy tale (there was one with red roofs I still can’t pronounce). Dresden surprised me. The Frauenkirche is so clean and pale it almost glows, but right next to it you see these blackened stones left after the bombing. It’s weirdly moving, standing there listening to Jana explain how they rebuilt everything by hand. We walked past Zwinger Palace where some kids were feeding pigeons (one nearly landed on my friend’s backpack — he yelped, everyone laughed). Lunch is on your own — which I liked because you can pick anything or just sit outside if the weather’s good. There’s this hum in Dresden’s Old Town around noon: church bells somewhere far off, people chatting in German or Czech, smells of coffee and pastry drifting out of doorways. The whole day felt unhurried, even though we saw so much. On the way back to Prague I realized my shoes were dusty from the bridge paths, which made me smile for some reason.
