The Experience

“You can touch the walls if you want,” our guide Jan said, and I did — cold stone, rough under my hand, like it hadn’t warmed up in decades. We’d just stepped into the Small Fortress at Terezin. I didn’t expect the air to feel that heavy, honestly. Jan told us about survivors he’d interviewed himself (he works with Pavel Batel’s team), and there was this pause where nobody said anything for a good minute. You could hear shoes scuffing on old floors and somewhere outside, a crow calling — weird what sticks in your head.

The tour wasn’t rushed at all; actually, we lingered way longer than I thought we would in the Magdeburg Barracks. There were drawings and music scores pinned behind glass, made by people who lived here during the war. Jan pointed out a poem written on scrap paper — he read it out loud in Czech first, then translated for us. I tried to imagine writing something hopeful in a place like that. My partner squeezed my hand so tight during that part (I still think about that moment). So yeah, this is not your usual day trip to Terezin from Prague — it’s slower and more personal.

We walked through the Jewish Cemetery and Crematorium after lunch (there’s no food included but you’ll want to eat light anyway). The grass was patchy from last week’s rain and someone had left pebbles on some of the headstones. Jan explained how memorials here changed over time — not just for tourists but for families who came back looking for names. He never rushed us; if anything, he waited until we were ready to move on.

I’m glad it was only eight of us — felt more like being shown around by someone who cared than being herded through with a big group. Pickup from Prague was easy (right at our hotel), and we got dropped off back in the city before dinner.
