The experience

You start inside a medieval monastery courtyard at a café tucked into the grounds, where marinated cheese and fresh bread arrive with a craft beer or homemade lemonade. The narrow alleys of Prague's former Jewish Town are visible from there, centuries of history compressed into a few blocks. From the monastery, a family-run gingerbread bakery opens its doors. You taste three pastries: one with walnuts and plum jam, one with poppy seeds, and a vanilla roll, each one the kind of thing locals grew up eating.

The walk moves through a Czech-Slovak deli for open-faced sandwiches, then past the Powder Tower and the Art Nouveau Municipal House: 15th-century Gothic next to 1000-year-old architecture, the city layered in stone. A stop at the Kolacherie bakery brings the most popular Czech pastry, the koláč, warm and familiar. You pass the Estates Theatre, where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni, before the day closes at Café Louvre, an institution where the svíčková (braised beef sirloin in a creamy root vegetable sauce with bread dumplings) has been legendary for over a century. The meal finishes with apple strudel and custard, and a local craft lager, Moravian wine, or homemade lemonade.

The whole route takes three and a half hours. A guide walks with you the entire way, pointing out what matters and explaining the food as you taste it. Groups stay at twelve or fewer, so the stops don't feel crowded.
