The Experience
The first thing I remember is that flicker of golden light on the Vltava as we crossed into Malá Strana — the kind of scene you try to photograph but never quite capture. Our guide, Petra, handed us tiny glasses of slivovitz at the museum (it’s this plum brandy that smells like a memory you can’t place). She told us how her grandfather used to make his own in the countryside. I’m not usually a spirits person, but it warmed my throat and made me laugh for no reason.
We ducked into an old seminary house just steps from Charles Bridge — it looked like something out of a storybook, honestly. The breadrolls were still warm, slathered with garlicky lard spread. I tried to say “česnek” properly and probably butchered it; Petra grinned anyway. The craft lager was cold and foamy, perfect after walking those cobbled lanes. Beef goulash came next in a little restaurant called “In the Bath” (the name made sense when you saw the old stone walls), served with dumplings so soft they almost fell apart on my fork.
We wandered Kampa Island while dusk settled in — there’s this quiet hum from the Devil’s Stream and people sitting along the banks, half-whispering in Czech. The air smelled faintly of river water and fried onions from somewhere nearby. At one point I just stopped talking because Prague at night feels like it should be listened to instead.
The last stop was this alchemy-themed bar near Waldstein Palace — honestly, I thought it would be kitschy but it wasn’t at all. The bartender slid over a glass swirling with smoke (dry ice magic) and winked when I hesitated before sipping. It tasted herbal and sharp, nothing like what I expected. There was laughter from a couple in the corner and for a second I felt like part of some secret club. We finished up at Spoon Cafe — there’s literally a giant spoon on the wall because of some grandmother’s wedding gift story — and by then my feet were tired but my head was full of new things.
What’s included
Your evening includes six tasting samples like beef goulash near Charles Bridge, three alcoholic drinks including slivovitz brandy and a signature smoking cocktail at the Museum of Alchemists, all led by an English-speaking local guide through historic neighborhoods — so you can just show up hungry and curious without worrying about anything else along the way.
