The Experience

We were already halfway up the winding roads of the Troodos mountains before I realized how much cooler the air felt compared to Larnaca. Our guide, Maria, pointed out tiny chapels tucked between olive trees as we bumped along — she knew every twist in the road and every family name in these villages. First stop was a small winery where the owner’s hands looked permanently stained by grape skins; he poured us a white that smelled faintly of wildflowers. I tried to swirl it like I’d seen on TV but mostly just splashed some on my jeans. Nobody seemed to mind.

The second winery was even smaller — more like someone’s living room than a business. We tasted Commandaria, which Maria said is older than most European wines (she told it like a secret). The air inside was thick with that musty-sweet smell you only get in cellars. At one point, the winemaker’s dog wandered in and lay down at our feet. I’m not sure if it was the wine or just the way everyone laughed together, but I felt oddly at home.

Lunch happened in Omodos, right on the square where old men played backgammon under vines. The meze kept coming — salty halloumi, grilled pork, olives that tasted almost smoky. Maria showed us how to say “thank you” in Greek (I mangled it; she grinned anyway). Afterward we had time to poke around little craft shops and peek into a church that smelled of incense and beeswax candles. There was no rush back to the van — just sunlight flickering off stone walls and someone playing music somewhere nearby. I still think about that slow afternoon sometimes.
