The Experience

We were already laughing about my helmet hair before we even left the shop on Poseidonos Avenue. Our guide, Andreas, handed out goggles and gave us a quick run-through on the buggies — I stalled mine twice in the parking lot, but nobody seemed to mind. The air smelled faintly salty, mixed with engine oil and sunscreen. We rolled out in a line, engines grumbling, heading straight for Riccos beach. That first blast of wind off the sea was sharp and cool, and I remember sand crunching between my teeth when I grinned too wide.

The coastal track was bumpier than I expected — at one point we passed a fisherman waving at us from his battered boat. The fields around Geroskipou looked dry but somehow still green in patches. At Mandria village beach, we stopped for drinks at this little bar where the owner barely glanced up from his newspaper. I got a lemonade that tasted like it had been squeezed five minutes ago. My hands were already dusty and sticky by then; there’s no way to stay clean on this kind of day trip in Paphos.

After that break (honestly could’ve sat there longer), we started climbing toward Asprokremmos Dam. Andreas pointed out how low the water was — he said locals worry every summer it’ll drop too far. The air changed as we climbed; it felt drier and quieter except for cicadas buzzing somewhere out of sight. The mountain tracks twisted through Nata and Episkopi villages, where houses huddled under this huge rocky cliff. We parked outside a kafenio — Greek coffee house — and the owner poured thick Cyprus coffee into tiny cups without saying much. I tried to say thank you in Greek; he just smiled and slid over some loukoumi sweets.

The ride back was quieter — maybe everyone was tired or just soaking it all in. My shirt was streaked with dust and sweat, but honestly? That’s how you know you did something right out here. Sometimes I still think about that view over the dam or how good that lemonade tasted after all the noise of the road had faded.
