The experience

The first thing I remember is the wind, not gentle, but full-on, almost salty in my hair as we stood at Shete Boka. Our guide, Franklin, grinned and shouted over the roar of the waves smashing into the black rocks. I could smell sea spray and something earthy from the cliffs. He told us how “boka” means mouth in Papiamentu, which made sense seeing how the ocean kept trying to swallow the land. I didn’t expect to feel so small watching that, or to laugh so much when my hat nearly took off for Venezuela.

We zigzagged across Curaçao all day, not really following a set order, just wherever felt right. At Kenepa Beach, the water was this impossible blue (I still think about that color), and some local kids were jumping off rocks like it was nothing. I dipped my toes in but mostly just watched people: families picnicking under faded umbrellas, a couple arguing softly in Dutch. The sand stuck to my legs for hours after. Lunch happened somewhere I can’t pronounce. Our server listed dishes by pointing at other tables and laughing when we tried to guess what was what.

Franklin knew everyone. He waved at fishermen feeding sea turtles near a tiny dock and stopped so we could watch flamingos picking through shallow water. At the Curacao Liqueur Distillery, he joked that the blue stuff “tastes better than it looks.” He wasn’t wrong (it’s sweeter than I thought). The Queen Emma Bridge swung open while we crossed: honestly felt like standing on a floating carpet as boats drifted past below. By then my phone was full of photos and my head kind of spinning from all the languages around us: Papiamentu, Spanish, Dutch… sometimes all in one sentence.
