The Experience
“Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the dust,” our guide Franklin grinned as he handed me the helmet. I laughed but honestly, I was already sweating a bit just thinking about driving the ATV. The sun was out (of course), but there was this salty breeze from the coast that made it all feel less heavy. The first few minutes were bumpy—my hands gripping way too tight—but Franklin rode ahead and kept glancing back with a thumbs up. We rattled past cactus fences and goats that didn’t even flinch at our noisy little parade.
I didn’t expect to care so much about the smell of the earth here—sort of dry and peppery—and then suddenly we’d be right by the water, with that sharp sea air cutting through everything else. The caves were cooler inside than I thought they’d be; Franklin pointed out these old marks on the stone and told us stories about people hiding out here ages ago. His accent is thick but warm, and he called everyone “amigo” no matter where we were from. There was a moment where all I could hear was my own breath echoing off the rock walls. Kind of eerie, kind of peaceful.
The best part? We stopped at this little bay where turtles come to nest (only if you do the longer day trip from Curacao). Didn’t see any turtles this time, but standing there watching the waves slap against black rocks felt like something private. Later we found flamingos—just standing around like they owned the place—and I tried to get a photo but mostly ended up laughing at myself for almost dropping my phone in a puddle. My arms were covered in dust by then and honestly it felt good to jump into that natural “Jacuzzi” Franklin showed us near the end. Cold shock at first, then just pure relief.
