Learn and practice stand up paddleboarding

  • Receive SUP introduction on land
  • Learn balance, paddling, and turning
  • Practice SUP in protected bay
  • Take beginner SUP tour with instructor
  • Option to practice alone or extend tour

The experience

You start with 15 to 20 minutes of instruction on land, where the instructor walks you through how to stand on the board, keep your balance, paddle and turn quickly. They'll cover safety basics and explain local winds and currents so you know what to watch for. Then you enter the water in a protected bay. The school's location is sheltered from waves and wind, and the boards are built with enough buoyancy that even first-timers feel stable. The instructor stays close, correcting your technique and helping you build confidence as you take your first strokes.

Once you've got the fundamentals down (usually within an hour), your instructor takes you out on your first beginner tour. The distance and route shift based on how the group is progressing, what you want to see and the day's conditions. You might paddle to nearby cliffs or cross the channel to the Pakleni Islands, exploring hidden bays and beaches you can't reach from shore. If you book the three-hour package, you can either practice solo on the board or extend the tour with your instructor guiding you further.

The school provides everything: a stand up paddle board with an adjustable paddle, a life jacket (optional for confident swimmers), a dry bag to keep your phone and keys safe, and a sun hat if you need one. Your belongings stay in free storage on shore. An experienced, English-speaking instructor leads the whole session, and accident insurance is included.

Top questions

How long does it take to learn the basics of stand up paddleboarding?

The basics (balance, paddling and turning) usually take an hour or less, depending on the group. Once you've got those down, your instructor takes you out on your first tour.

Can I choose where to paddle on my first tour?

The route depends on your group's skill level, what you'd like to see and the weather that day. You might paddle to nearby cliffs or cross to the Pakleni Islands to explore hidden bays and beaches.

What's the difference between the one-hour lesson and the three-hour package?

The one-hour lesson covers the basics and a short beginner tour. The three-hour package gives you more time to practice on your own or extend your tour further with the instructor.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to do this?

Stand up paddleboarding is suitable for all fitness levels. A life jacket is available if you want one, though it's not required for confident swimmers. The school's protected bay and stable boards are designed for beginners.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The route and distance adjust based on conditions. The school is in a sheltered bay, so you can learn and paddle even on days with wind or waves that would be rough elsewhere.
